Cascais, Portugal We were all set for an exciting Medal Race today in the Tornado World Championship, after a successful day on Sunday, with 15-9 finishes that pulled us up to tenth overall and qualified us as the tenth and final boat for the Medal racing. However, there was no race. ![]() Advanced Equities I at mark Weather has played a dominant role this week. It did today too as the notorious Cascais northerly slammed in with all its fury, gusting over 40 knots at times and cancelling all competition. The abandonment of racing marked the end of racing in the Tornado Class and leaves us in 10th overall. Most importantly, our 10th place finish put the USA amongst the 11 countries whose scores qualified them to compete in the Summer Olympic Games in Qingdao, China in 2008. Another four countries will have an opportunity to qualify at the 2008 Tornado World Championship in Auckland, New Zealand early next year. The Spanish team of Fernando Echavarri and Anton Paz won the Gold Medal after they sailed consistently all week, with only one result out of the top ten. Second place went to Belgium’s Carolijn Brouwer, who with her boyfriend Sebastien Godefroid on the wire, steered into second place, claiming the Silver Medal. Sailing under the Dutch flag, Australian Mitch Booth and his crew Pim Nieuwenhuis took third place and the Bronze. Full results from the worlds are available at Tornado World Championship Results.
