Qingdao, China We had one good race for a fourth place in today’s Tornado competition at Day Four of the 2007 Good Luck Beijing International Regatta but it took all day, and a long time on the water to achieve it. ![]() Tornados share this broad ramp with other classes We had occasional rain and three to five knots of wind, with conditions compounded by plenty of current. A front went through about 0800 with a quick squall and heavy rain shower and then the weather settled down to reasonable light air sailing conditions. The problem on our course was the lack of a course. The Race Committee had problems setting up because, with the prevailing breeze, two other courses overlapped with the area that had been allocated for the Tornado Racing. As a result we killed time on the water all day, along with the Star boats, waiting for the Finns and the Ynglings to complete their racing. When it was finally our turn we got a good start and sailed a solid first beat to round the top mark in sixth place. There was a lot of trash in the water and by then it was cloudy and raining. We constantly had to battle bags and garbage catching on our foils. This is definitely a place for patience and trying to remain calm to in order to perform well. We kept up the momentum on the run to pick up one boat before the leeward mark. All things considered, we were very happy with our speed. On the second windward leg we moved up to fourth place and held onto that until the finish. That pulls us up to 10th overall. Meanwhile the battle at the top continues. Austria’s double-Olympic Gold Medalist team of Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher remains in first, while the Aussies, Darren Bundock and Glenn Ashby, have moved up to second place. The weather man is promising more of the same tomorrow, so we are looking forward to logging another good result. The latest results from Qingdao will be at Tornado Pre-Olympic Results as soon as they become available. Also, be sure to visit our website at www.t-squaredracing.com.
