San Diego, Calif.
October 5, 2007

Here we are in San Diego getting ready for the most important regatta of the four-year cycle, the U.S. Olympic Trials. The regatta is a 16-race series, two discards, lowest score wins and the winner goes to the 2008 Olympic Games in China! We have six entries for the event.

Nationals Trophy - We’re beginning to get the hang of it!

We have been here for one month training. We started with German and Puerto Rican training partners, coaches Jay Glaser and Andi Hagara, plus a lot of ideas and sails to test. We sailed four to five hours each day testing and racing. The time spent was excellent. We made a lot of progress in our speed and racing game. We also learned how to deal with San Diego's terrible kelp. What a nightmare! When you’re going 20 knots, hitting a kelp island can make you very slow.

After two and a half weeks of training we raced the U.S. Nationals. It was a three-day event in light air with all of the U.S. boats racing, as well as some foreign boats. We won the event and became the National Tornado Champions for the 11th time in our careers. Our German training partners Johannes "JoJo" Polgar and Florian "Flo" Spalteholz, were second while the American team of Robbie Daniel and Hunter Stunzi were third. It was good to see our training pay off.

After the Nationals we went home for four days to relax and prepare for the ensuing battle. We arrived back here on Wednesday, had the boat officially measured and reassembled her. Thursday was spent with some more boat work, plus three hours of sailing to "get the feel back" and then off for a nice dinner. We sailed a short time on Friday and then more food. We can’t wait for our dinner as it is time to eat for some energy after dieting for two months. We are ready to eat! Johnny has lost 15lbs. and me 10lbs! Light air San Diego here we come. Stay tuned for the Trials

Our host club is the San Diego Yacht Club. Competition begins on Saturday, October 6 at noon, out on Coronado Roads and continues every day through October 14, with the tenth set aside as layday or makeup day. We’ll have a daily update for you, plus Tornado Results here. Our sponsor, Advanced Equities, is at www.advancedequities.com.

Sail fast,
Charlie Ogletree - Team Advanced Equities I
