Gales Wash Out Worlds Practice Race PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Auckland, NZ
February 24, 2008

The 53 Tornado catamaran crews assembled here in Takapuna should have competed in a practice race today before the start of competition in the 2008 International Tornado World Championship tomorrow but a two-day storm killed that idea.

Storm conditions

Rain and northeasterly winds gusting to 50 knots pounded Takapuna Beach on Friday and Saturday. Today the breeze had eased to 15 knots but waves were still high and the sand at the foot of the launch ramps had been undermined, making it impossible to wheel boats onto the beach.

The breeze is forecast to switch onshore with light southwesterly breezes before racing starts tomorrow. If the organizers get the ramps patched up we shouldn’t have any problems launching but we can expect a few headaches from the big puffy shifts and pressure differentials that the southwesterly brings to this location. It’s expected to be lighter again on Tuesday and lighter still on Wednesday with the breeze shifting east.

Our Advanced Equities Racing Team is ready to go after a rather harrowing journey through the official measurement process. Measurement itself was straightforward and we passed with flying colors. The problem was getting the boats to the measurers.

The measurement team set up shop in a parking garage on the opposite side of the road from the Takapuna Boating Club so we had to muscle the boats up a steep grassy hill in driving rain, then cross a busy road and an equally busy parking lot. Then it got really interesting because the guys who built the garage never intended to wheel Tornados through the doors. We had to manually pick the boats up off their dollies and angle them through the door opening, the cement sides of which had been carpeted for the occasion. All this while garage tenants drove in and out.

Mark Kenna, our US Sailing physiotherapist arrived today and that was good news because Charlie tweaked his back two days ago while helping the Chinese crew lift their boat through the garage door. He’s doing a good job helping Charlie recover from my sore back.

Welcome Haka

The weather forced the official opening ceremonies were indoors on Saturday where our arrival in this country was challenged by a traditional Maori haka performed by local college students. I guess we passed the test because the challenge was followed by further performances signifying welcome.

Our host club for this event is the Takapuna Boating Club. You can download full results at Takapuna Tornado Worlds. We want to acknowledge all the support of our sponsor, Advanced Equities.

Sail fast,

Johnny Lovell & Charlie Ogletree - Team Advanced Equities I
