Eighth With One Day Remaining PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Auckland, New Zealand
February 29, 2008

The breeze today was the best of the regatta. We nailed another third place in the first race and a 13th in the second to move up to eighth in the overall scores for the 2008 International Tornado World Championship.

All the boats were fully powered-up in the 15-20 knot northeaster and we ripped through two races on choppy seas under a sunny sky. After a slow start to the regatta, the Australian crew of Darren Bundock and Glenn Ashby have been steadily working their way up through the standings. With a first place and a sixth in today’s races they took over the lead from the French crew of Yann Guichard & Alexandre Guyader who dropped to third. Canada’s Oskar Johansson & Kevin Stittle are now in second.

The Australians got a great start in the first race and consistently pulled away from their pursuers on every leg. We got an excellent start and we were fourth at the windward mark for the first two laps before taking over third place and finishing comfortably in third.

Roman Hagara & Hans Peter Steinacher, the double Gold medalists from Austria led all the way in the second race after capsizing in the first. Roman and Hans were also fighting to qualify their country to race in Qingdao and their comeback today is probably enough to win them a place. A problem with a cleat left us stuck in the pack on the starting line. We rounded the weather mark in 26th place but did a real good job of clawing our way back to 13th.

We’re currently just one point out of seventh place with two races remaining tomorrow. However, there’s a possibility we won’t get a chance to race. With a cold front moving in from the Tasman Sea and the threat of heavy wind and rain, the forecast calls for onshore northeast winds, building to 25 knots and gusting 35 knots in the morning. The forecast for the afternoon is northerly 30 knots gusting 40 knots late afternoon. We’ll have to wait and see.

Our host club for this event is the Takapuna Boating Club. You can download full results at Takapuna Tornado Worlds. We want to acknowledge all the support from our sponsor, Advanced Equities.

Sail fast,
